Vigilante Into the Darkness American Post Apocalyptic EMP Thriller eBook Cliff Deane

Sorry to the author as I normally really like survival and PAW fiction, however within just the first few pages I was already disappointed. The characters aren't even 2 dimensional... the stereotypical portrayal (of both the "good" and bad guys) and the attitudes just had me shaking my head.

The EMP event happened sometime overnight and the main character wakes up to find his wife already (to put it mildly) beaten and dead just down the hallway from his hotel room. Even the main character, who seems to be a walking encyclopedia coupled with a psychic in that he always knows just what to do, has not yet figured out what has happened but the bad guys somehow already have and started their nefarious activities? Not believable. Of course everything else he does is always seen by those around him as just exactly what should be doing. He gives commands to perfect strangers and everyone just jumps right to it and carries out his orders. There is no confrontation. No mistakes made. Nothing to show this guy as anything but perfect. This gets boring really fast.

He is also an exercise in hypocrisy. The "refugees" are going to do anything to get what they want. Take, steal, kill, etc. Then of course the "hero" ends up repeatedly doing just this yet always justifies it as perfectly acceptable for him because he has to survive.

The final straw for me was when the local survival group with the usual retreat lands, guns, ammo, supplies, etc interacts with the "hero" and within minutes hands him (a total stranger) the leadership in all but name and pretty much begs him to save them as they somehow suddenly decide they are clueless. I could go on and on about the gun shop owner and walmart manager, etc. but it's all just same 1 dimensional repetition... everything always goes exactly as the "hero" wants. I got the impression he could fall naked into a sewage pit and come up smelling like roses, fully armed and with a perfectly clean uniform.

To give credit, the military aspects and the EMP details were pretty accurate showing the author either has a background here or at least did his research on these points.

I was literally a few percent into the book when the disappointment meter started to go off and ultimately gave it up at just over 25%. There are too many other books out there for me to have continued with this one.

Again, my apologies to the author as I don't like to leave bad reviews, but you really need to work on conflict/challenges for your characters, flesh them out beyond a stick figure level and keep the stereotyping to a minimum. Your work shows definite potential, but at this point it reads to me like an early first draft or even just a glorified outline. Keep at it, get some "beta" readers to provide feedback early on and I think you have the potential to produce a much more engaging and believable story.

Vigilante Into the Darkness American Post Apocalyptic EMP Thriller eBook Cliff Deane Reviews

Cliff is a great and talented writer, I really enjoyed reading hiis book , great story , great genre. I`m going to order the other books of Cliff Deane. I strongly recommend to everyone to purchase this book and others from this author. Thank for Mr Deane for your amazing work, really enjoyed everything I read so far!
I love this story but was shaken with what happened to Sarah in the first chapter, but after struggling through that event I found myself having a very hard time putting the book down. I love reading and really love Post-Apocalyptic books and have read many. One Second After was the springboard for me with this genre and I have loved many and put a few down never to return as the story line would go way-off, then just fall apart, but not this one. Levi goes right into what you think he should do and be the kind of man you would want him to be.
I hope there will be a book 2, because I really want, to no "need" to know what happens to Levi & Katie after they leave the security of Defiance.
From unimaginable sadness to hope for the future. In between, there are characters full of life and honor, unspeakable animals, and the people who are caught in the middle. When the three types mix, there are clashes and triumphs, defeats and pain. Just the right mix of horror and hope!
I have read other EMP sagas, but this was well thought out. The forces of good and evil ramp up in times such as these. I enjoyed learning the strategy to survive, because I think we all suspect we may need that knowledge one day. I recommend this book.
I am waiting for the sequels......
So, I really wanted to like this book as I am a huge fan of "post apocolypse" style fiction. But, I just couldn't get into the groove with this author's style of writing. I felt he rushed through certain parts of the story and assumed certain aspects of the story would be understood or known by the reader. In the end I just couldn't get invested in the main character enough to continue on. I think the concept of the story is good I just didn't enjoy the author's style of writing.
A massive electromagnetic pulse destroys the not only the electric grids of the world, but any machine that uses electricity to function. Darkness envelopes the world and most of mankind descends into the darkness of brutality. That is the basis for the vigilante society that is built to restore the ideals of our constitution slowly and in stages. No it will not be instantaneous. The author has din view of the majority of humans. The brutality is stark. If you want a novel filled with fighting and man’s ability to inflict pain, this is your book. It is well written, but at times it was difficult to find much difference in the hero’s tactics than in the villains that hunger and lack of community can bring. Will this really be the fate of the world if such darkness descends? You’ll have to read it and decide for yourself. There are no real women in this novel. They are the weaker, second class as their appearance is brief and for the most part they are victims.
